Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi

January 14, 2026

Fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Observed in Pausha Shukla Paksha, this Ekadashi involves offering sesame seeds (tila) in six ways and is said to cleanse past sins and bring merit.

Why We Celebrate

Shattila Ekadashi involves the offering of sesame seeds (tila) in six prescribed ways — bathing with them, applying them, offering them in havan, donating them, eating them, and using them in worship. According to the Bhavishya Purana, a woman who fasted but never gave charity was taught by Lord Vishnu to observe this Ekadashi to cleanse her karma.

How It's Celebrated

1

Wake before sunrise and take a bath

2

Observe a complete fast — avoid grains, rice, beans, and lentils

3

If unable to fast completely, eat only fruits, milk, nuts, and sabudana (tapioca)

4

Worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi leaves, flowers, and incense

5

Read or listen to the Vishnu Sahasranama or Bhagavad Gita

6

Spend the day in prayer, meditation, and satsang

7

Break the fast the next morning (Dwadashi) after sunrise at the prescribed time
