Vasant Panchami

वसंत पंचमी

January 23, 2026

The arrival of spring is celebrated by worshipping Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and arts. Devotees wear yellow clothes and place books and instruments near her image for blessings.

Why We Celebrate

Vasant Panchami celebrates the arrival of spring and honors Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, arts, and learning. According to tradition, Brahma created the world but found it silent and joyless, so he created Saraswati, whose veena filled the world with sound and knowledge. Yellow (basanti) is the color of the day, symbolizing the mustard fields that bloom across North India. It also marks the beginning of preparations for Holi, which comes 40 days later.

Vasant Panchami celebrates the arrival of spring (Vasant) and honors Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, music, and learning. According to legend, when Brahma created the universe, he found it silent and lifeless. To bring rhythm and beauty to creation, he manifested Saraswati, who played her veena (a stringed instrument), filling the world with sound, wisdom, and color.

The festival is marked by the color yellow (Basanti), symbolizing the blooming mustard fields of North India and the vibrancy of spring. Students place their books, pens, and musical instruments near Saraswati's image to receive her blessings. In Bengal, this is called Saraswati Puja and is the most important day of the academic year. Children are initiated into learning (Aksharabhyasam) by writing their first letters.

Vasant Panchami also marks the official countdown to Holi, which comes 40 days later. It is a day to honor learning, creativity, and the arts — whether you are a student seeking wisdom or simply welcoming the renewal that spring brings.
