Why We Celebrate
Akshaya Tritiya, meaning "the third day of never-ending prosperity," is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. It falls on the third day (Tritiya) of the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of Vaishakha month. The word "Akshaya" means imperishable or eternal — anything begun on this day is believed to grow and never diminish. According to tradition, on this day the Treta Yuga began, Lord Parashurama (the sixth avatar of Vishnu) was born, and the Ganges descended to earth.
It is also the day when Veda Vyasa and Lord Ganesha began writing the Mahabharata. In the Mahabharata, Draupadi received the Akshaya Patra (an inexhaustible vessel of food) from the Sun God on this day. Because of these sacred associations, Akshaya Tritiya is considered one of the few days that requires no astrological consultation (muhurat) — it is inherently auspicious for all activities.
People buy gold, start new businesses, perform weddings, and make charitable donations on this day, trusting that these actions will bring lasting prosperity. It is a day to invest in what endures — whether material wealth, spiritual merit, or good deeds.
