Devshayani Ekadashi
Fasting day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On this Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, Vishnu goes to cosmic sleep for four months (Chaturmas). No auspicious ceremonies are held until he awakens.
Why We Celebrate
Devshayani Ekadashi marks the day Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra (cosmic sleep) on the serpent Shesha in the Ksheer Sagar (ocean of milk). The four-month period of Chaturmas begins, during which no auspicious ceremonies like weddings are performed. Devotees intensify their spiritual practices during this period. The Pandharpur Ashadi Ekadashi pilgrimage in Maharashtra, where lakhs walk to Lord Vitthal's temple, falls on this day.
