Onam

ओणम

August 26, 2026

Kerala's grand harvest festival celebrating the annual return of the beloved King Mahabali. A ten-day celebration (from Atham to Thiruvonam) featuring flower carpets, feasts, boat races, and cultural performances.

Why We Celebrate

Onam commemorates the golden age of King Mahabali, a just and generous Asura king whose realm knew no poverty, crime, or unhappiness. Pleased and threatened by his virtue, the Devas asked Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu took the Vamana (dwarf) avatar and asked Mahabali for three paces of land. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cosmic proportions, covering earth and heaven in two steps. For the third, Mahabali offered his own head. Impressed by his devotion, Vishnu granted him the boon of visiting his people once a year — that visit is Onam. The festival celebrates the values of generosity, equality, and prosperity.

Onam celebrates the annual visit of the beloved King Mahabali (Maveli), an asura (demon) king who once ruled Kerala. Despite being an asura, Mahabali was a just, generous, and noble ruler under whose reign there was no poverty, jealousy, or crime — it was a true golden age. However, the gods became concerned about his growing power and asked Lord Vishnu to intervene. Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a dwarf brahmin boy, and asked Mahabali for three paces of land.

Mahabali agreed, and Vamana grew into a giant cosmic form (Trivikrama), covering the earth in one step and the heavens in the second. For the third step, the humble king offered his own head. Impressed by Mahabali's devotion and sacrifice, Vishnu granted him a boon: he could visit his beloved people of Kerala once a year. Onam is that day — the people of Kerala welcome their king with flower carpets (Pookalam), grand feasts (Onasadya), and joyful celebrations.

Onam is a harvest festival celebrating abundance, unity, and equality. It transcends religion and caste — everyone in Kerala celebrates together. The ten-day festival includes boat races, traditional dances, and the famous Onasadya feast with 26 vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf. It is a time to honor the past, celebrate prosperity, and welcome the spirit of a just and compassionate king.

How It's Celebrated

1

Create a Pookalam (flower carpet/rangoli) at the entrance, adding a new ring of flowers each day of the ten-day festival

2

On Thiruvonam day, prepare the grand Onasadya — a 26-dish vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf

3

Key Onasadya dishes: avial, olan, sambar, rasam, parippu, pachadi, payasam (at least 3 types)

4

Watch or participate in Vallam Kali (snake boat races) — the Nehru Trophy Boat Race is the most famous

5

Enjoy Pulikali (tiger dance) — performers painted as tigers dance through streets

6

Play traditional games like tug-of-war, Onakkalikal, and Thumbi Thullal (dance)

7

Install a clay pyramid (Thrikkakara Appan) representing King Mahabali and worship it

Did You Know?

  • The Onasadya (Onam feast) traditionally has 26 vegetarian dishes served on a banana leaf in a specific order, and it's considered inauspicious to leave any food on the leaf — finishing everything brings prosperity.
  • Vallam Kali, the famous snake boat races of Kerala during Onam, feature boats over 100 feet long with up to 100 rowers singing in unison — it's one of the most thrilling traditional sports in India.
  • Onam is unique because it celebrates a demon king (asura) rather than a god — King Mahabali is remembered not for his power but for his humility, generosity, and just rule.
